The castle Selwerd was a fortified stone house built outside the city of Groningen in the Middle Ages. It is precisely known where this castle stood, namely to the northwest of the city of Groningen, next to the current cemetery Selwerderhof, between the Van Starkenborghkanaal and the Paddepoelsterweg. There lies the rolling grassland called the Huppels, the historical site of the castle Selwerd. It can be overlooked from an observation tower, which has been placed at the Laan naar het Klooster. This refers to the Selwerd Monastery, and is a former clay road that appears on a map from the 18th century. In the 1990s, several archaeological investigations took place on this site. The site has been a protected archaeological underground national monument since 1975.
