Former Melkinrichting de Sierkan

The building at Keizerstraat 12-16, built in 1896-1897 to a design by architect J. de Quack in Transitional Architecture with characteristics from the Neo-Gothic and Art Nouveau periods, was one of the eventually more than 50 milk distribution points in The Hague and Scheveningen.

When the supply of fresh milk became problematic due to the growth of the city, a group of concerned residents of The Hague founded the dairy factory "'s-Gravenhaagsche Melkinrichting De Sierkan" in 1879. From the factory (later several), the milk was transported in horse-drawn wagons with milk tanks to a steadily expanding network of dispensing points.

De Sierkan existed for more than a century until it was taken over by the Melkunie Cooperative Milk Centre in 1986.
