The lake was created in the mid-sixties in the Hardenberg forest area, with a beach surrounding the pond. In the center of the pond lies a small island. In 2008/2009, a hardened path was constructed as a cooperative track, but also intended for wheelchair users. There are also many cycling and walking paths in the forest area around the pond. In the vicinity of the recreation pond, there are a large number of campsites, particularly around the hamlet of Rheeze, making it a tourist attraction. Furthermore, the pond is used for ice skating during harsh frost and in recent years, a New Year's dive has been held when there is no ice on it.
