The church became part of the then-built Mary and Lebuinus basilica from the end of the 13th century. Unlike the chapter church of St. Lebuinus, it was intended for the bourgeoisie as a parish church. At the beginning of the 16th century, the parish church separated from the chapter church, and the new Mary church was built next to the Great Church dedicated to Lebuinus. The side aisles of both churches were more or less in line with each other. For a long time, there was a passageway between the two churches. On the side of the Great Churchyard, the so-called Virgin Houses were built to accommodate single women.
