Station Kijkuit ( kijk) served for 80 years (as the smallest station in Zeeland) on the railway line (54) from Mechelen to Terneuzen from October 1871 to October 1951. Already when the railway was built in 1871, an alternative track had been built on the outskirts of the hamlet of Kijkuit for the supply and removal of mainly agricultural products. In 1875 this alternative track was extended by 120 metres for the benefit of the beet campaign and fertilizer trade. From 1885 Kijkuit was given the status of a stop and in 1897 it was back to a station, after which it became a stop again in 1926. In its most glorious period, the yard consisted of five tracks. At that time, 4 people passed here every day and
5 freight trains from Terneuzen to St. Niklaas. At the end of the 16th century, Prince Maurits built Fort 'Kijckuit' as one of the defences against the Spaniards.
