Withuishof

De Withuishof is a neoclassical country house located on the outskirts of Scharn in the eastern part of the municipality of Maastricht. The house has been a national monument since 1967 and is considered part of the Buitengoed Geul & Maas.

The origin of the Withuishof house is not known, but at least dates back to the 17th century. In the 18th century, it was a gentlemen's farm owned by Mathias Sleypen, a wine merchant in Maastricht and since 1773 the owner of the Sibberhuuske. He sold it in 1792 to Jean Schoenmaeckers, a surveyor, mayor, secretary of the free imperial lordship of Berg and Terblijt, secretary of the lordship of Strucht, and steward of the Saint Gerlach monastery. In 1792 and 1795, two daughters of Sleypen, Maria Anna Sibylle and Anna Philippina, married two sons of Jean Schoenmaeckers, Martin Jacob and Johan Balthasar, resulting in the merging of money and property into one family. The Sleypen and Schoenmaeckers families would establish a 'real estate empire' through the strategic purchase of former ecclesiastical and noble estates during and after the French period, which was unparalleled in South Limburg.
