The pavilion originally served as a sheltered observation post. During wartime, a 'land guard' was established to notice approaching enemy ships in time, so that a possible landing could be prevented. Such an observation post was also referred to as a watch house or a Sentinel. As early as 1598, the Appointed Councils of Zeeland established a 'land guard'. The pavilion also served as an observation post during the First World War. In 2000, the pavilion was destroyed by fire. In 2001, it was rebuilt on behalf of the Renesse Foundation.
On July 16, 2009, the pavilion burned down again. After the pavilion was repaired in December 2009, it burned down again on April 15, 2011. The pavilion has since been rebuilt and was completed on November 1, 2011, but now with a zinc roof.
