You pass here the old route of the railway line that formed the connection between Amersfoort and Kesteren in the Betuwe. The line was opened in 1886 and was part of the international rail connection between Amsterdam, Nijmegen, and Cologne. Between 1890 and 1920, the line was used intensively for this purpose; after that, the connection became less important. World War II permanently ended the connection with Nijmegen, as the Rhine bridge at Rhenen was severely damaged twice. A new traffic bridge was built on the old pillars of the bridge. The last freight train from Amersfoort to Rhenen ran here in 1972. The route is still easily recognizable in the landscape, including the embankment and the various crossing keeper's houses.
