The church of Barneveld is famous for Jan van Schaffelaar who, according to tradition, jumped from the tower in 1482. That is not the current tower of the church, which dates from 1828.
The story took place during the Hoekse and Kabeljouwse conflicts. Jan van Schaffelaar was a 'Kabeljouw' and had barricaded himself in the tower with supporters because they were besieged by Hoekse soldiers from Amersfoort and Nijkerk. To spare his fellow soldiers, Jan van Schaffelaar jumped from the tower and survived the fall. He was murdered on the spot by his enemies.
The statue in the Torenplein has been in this place since 1903.
