The Water Barrier Nijkerkersluis in the Randmeren between the Nuldernauw (East Side) and the Nijkerkernauw (West Side) was constructed between 1963 and 1965 and was taken into use in 1966. The water barrier protects the Veluwe along the eastern Randmeren and the adjacent polders against high water from the Markermeer, which is considered outside water. The Nijkerkersluis serves as a lock for shipping (35,000 passing ships per year) and bridges the relatively small difference in level between the two Randmeren.
