The Swan Water south of Callantsoog is centuries old and intact. The two largest dune lakes in Western Europe are hidden here. The Zwanenwater is a protected nature reserve in top condition. This oasis in the dunes offers rare animals and plants ideal living conditions.
In the past, residents had the right to breed swans on both dune lakes. This right has long since disappeared, but the name Swan Water has remained.
The Uitlandse Polder is located against the Zwanenwater. The Uitlandse Polder is of crucial importance for the Zwanenwater. By keeping the water level dry here, the Swan Water is prevented from drying out. The situation has been reduced as far as possible to the situation around 1600 when this area was reclaimed. The former young dunes (also called 'nolletjes') are clearly visible again and the old subdivision pattern is also visible again.
