The first inhabitants in the moraine area settled on the transition from high to low, from dry to wet. Characteristic of the moraine area are the flank villages, where the habitation occurs on one side of the ash tree: on the low side (near the green soils). An ash tree (also called scary or enk) is a field raised by plag fertilization.
Plaggenbetilization is also called potting shed culture. Plags placed on the heath were used as a substrate for the cattle in potting stables (stables in which the manure is potted) and sheepfolds. The plags were placed in the barn as litter and thus mixed with animal excrement into compost that was finally brought to the field on the ash tree annually for fertilization.
