In the name 'Zevenbergen', the 'bergen' refers to small elevations in the landscape, such as hills. It likely concerned three such elevations. In 1964 and 1965, two of these hills were investigated, yielding remains from the Bronze Age. Zevenbergen is mentioned in documents from the 13th century. Initially as a subdivision of the Lordship of Strijen, later as a separate fief of the County of Holland. Zevenbergen remained a Dutch city until December 21, 1805. On that date, a new boundary was established between Holland and Batavian Brabant. From then on, this ran from Willemstad through the Hollands Diep and the Biesbosch to Heusden.
