The canal runs from the village of Stedum southeast towards the Westerwijtwerdermaar. The water is hardly significant for drainage. Its main function is that of a shipping canal, although that meaning lies far in the past. Nowadays, it is hardly navigated. However, water is taken from the canal for the pumping stations Krangeweer on the northwest side via the Dorpstertocht and Hemert on the southeast side, via the Lutjewijtwerdertocht.
