Stolwijk is mentioned for the first time in 1320 in the registration of the count's fiefs in the Krimpenerwaard. On 19 September 1320 it is mentioned: "A farm, large 8 morgen, in Stolwijk above the church, east: Ticlenland".
Stolwijk has always been an agricultural municipality, living off the land, dairy cattle and cheese factory for centuries. The coat of arms also shows the sources of existence: the stacked cheeses.
