Stolwijk viene menzionata per la prima volta nel 1320 nella registrazione dei prestiti conteali nella Krimpenerwaard. Il 19 settembre 1320 viene citato: "Una fattoria, grande 8 morgen, a Stolwijk sopra la chiesa, est: Ticlenland".
Stolwijk è storicamente stata un comune agricolo, da secoli vive della terra, del bestiame da latte e della produzione di formaggio. Anche nello stemma sono rappresentate le fonti di sussistenza: i formaggi impilati. Solo l'origine della corona nello stemma non può essere chiarita poiché all'epoca della creazione dello stemma non erano noti casati reali.
