Stolwijk wird erstmals im Jahr 1320 in der Registrierung der Grafenlehen in der Krimpenerwaard erwähnt. Am 19. September 1320 wird erwähnt: "Ein Hof, groß 8 Morgen, in Stolwijk über der Kirche, Osten: Ticlenland".
Stolwijk ist seit jeher eine agrarische Gemeinde gewesen, die seit Jahrhunderten vom Land, Milchkühen und Käseherstellung lebt. Auch im Wappen sind die Existenzgrundlagen dargestellt: die gestapelten Käse. Nur die Herkunft der Krone im Wappen ist nicht zu erklären, da es bei der Entstehung des Wappens keine Königshäuser gab.
