Stolwijk se menciona por primera vez en 1320 en el registro de las concesiones condales en Krimpenerwaard. El 19 de septiembre de 1320 se menciona: "Una granja, de 8 Morgen, en Stolwijk sobre la iglesia, este: Ticlenland".
Stolwijk ha sido históricamente un municipio agrícola, viviendo durante siglos de la tierra, el ganado lechero y la fabricación de queso. También en el escudo están representadas las fuentes de existencia: los quesos apilados. Solo el origen de la corona en el escudo no se puede determinar porque en el momento de la creación del escudo no había casas reales conocidas.
