The Protestant Cemetery of Oudewater contains the graves of seven airmen from the Commonwealth who were killed on April 10, 1943.
During the night of April 9 to 10, 1943, the Lancaster ED502 WS-V (Barbara Mary) took off from RAF Waddington in Lincolnshire, England. The aircraft was part of No. 9 Squadron of RAF Bomber Command. On the way back to base, the Lancaster was shot down by Hauptmann Hans-Dieter Frank of 2./NJG 1. It was his 21st victory. The ED502 crashed at 23:45 near Snelrewaard, three kilometers east of Oudewater.
The aircraft participated in the attack on Duisburg that night. A total of 104 Lancasters and 5 Mosquitos were sent to the target. Due to heavy cloud cover, the attacking force was dispersed. 8 Lancasters were lost.
