The Oude Zederik is a canal in the Netherlands, which is part of the watercourse boundary of the Alblasserwaard and Utrecht.Zederik is an old Germanic name whose oldest known spelling is Serich. Later this changed to Seric, Zerike and finally as Zeerik or Zederik. What exactly the name Zederik means cannot be said with certainty. It is most likely that the name Zederik was a regional species name, i.e. a concept, by which was meant a water drainage that lay outside or on the outer border of the mined peatland.
