The peat river Vlist forms the border between the Krimpenerwaard and the Lopikerwaard. A host is an old name for a flat landscape enclosed by watercourses. In the values area, the transition area from river clay to sea clay, there are large gradually sloping bowls with peat or a thin layer of clay on peat at the surface. Due to the wet soil, the bowl soils are only usable as grassland for cattle.
The Vlist runs from Schoonhoven to Haastrecht where it flows into the Hollandsche IJssel. The Vlist was used as a bosom (temporary storage place for excess polder water) for the polders around the river, so there were many mills on the banks of the Vlist for pumping the water.
In the past, the Vlist was used for the transport of goods by skippers with barges. A skipper maintains a regular service between a number of places. A barge is a ship that was pulled from shore by a horse. Nowadays the river mainly has a tourist function.
