The Vecht, sometimes referred to as the Utrecht Vecht, is a Dutch river that runs through the provinces of Utrecht and North Holland. The Vecht originated around 600 BC as part of the Rhine delta and the upper course of the Oer-IJ. The Vecht begins at the Weerdsluis in the city of Utrecht and flows into the IJmeer about 40 kilometers further at Muiden. Along the way, the Vecht flows past places such as Maarssen, Breukelen, Loenen, and Weesp.
In the Middle Ages, the Vecht was a very important shipping connection between what is now the IJsselmeer and the Rhine, which also provided access to Germany.
In the 17th century, the Golden Age, successful Amsterdam merchants had country estates built or renovated along the Vecht.
Now, the Vecht is a beloved river for recreational boating.
