The river area slopes from east to west, so that the lowest-lying polders in the west have to process all the water from the higher grounds in the east. To protect the polders against this, cross dikes were built in the past. These are more or less oriented north-south, between the major rivers. The Diefdijk runs from the Lek near Geldermalsen to the Waal near Gorinchem and is about 23 km long.
In 1248, the Count of Holland put an end to the flooding caused by his neighbours. Every year there were floods from the higher regions of Gelderland. A large dike between the Lek and the Linge had to put an end to this. That dike was soon given the name Diefdijk. Because the farmland on the east side of the dike has been regularly flooded since then, it yielded much less. The farmers felt robbed.
Flood water that came up against the Diefdijk was drained to the Waal via the Linge.
