By 1355, Weesp already had an earthen and wooden fortification. The city was strategically located on the border between the power areas of the Counts of Holland and the Bishop of Utrecht. After the French siege in 1672, the defense of Weesp was significantly expanded with four bastions, two of which were located at the Ossenmarkt. The fortification with the Torenfort at the Ossenmarkt and the fortifications in the surrounding area were part of the Hollandic Waterline and later also of the Amsterdam Defense Line. Industry has always been important for Weesp: breweries, distilleries, and cacao production played a role in the local economy for centuries.
