Between Den Helder and Julianadorp, more and more nature reserves are being created. Bulb soil is converted into strolling nature. One is allowed to get off the paths, or rather, there are almost no paths. The area was given the name Mariëndal and is part of the Duinzoom plan near Den Helder.
Mariëndal is one of the largest nature development projects in the Netherlands. The area is located on the edge of dunes and polders. The water level is very natural because the water is not connected to the polder. The terrain is very wet and soggy in the winter period due to the rainfall and seepage from the adjacent dunes. In the course of the summer, the water level drops.
