In Drenthe you will find the remains of 53 prehistoric dolmens within a radius of 30 km.
They are burial vaults, consisting of sometimes more than 20 tons of boulders. These oldest monuments in the Netherlands were built 5,000 years ago by the funnel beaker people. At that time, the first farmers lived in Drenthe. The stones used were boulders carried by glaciers during the ice age.
The dolmens are sometimes hidden in hard-to-reach places, this gives them a mysterious appearance. Each dolmen is different and has a unique construction. They seem timeless and you come face to face with prehistory.
