The original medieval church of Borger was demolished at the beginning of the 19th century due to its dilapidated state and replaced by the current so-called water state church. The tower is still the original Gothic tower from the 14th century.
Waterstaatskerk is the name for Dutch church buildings that were built between 1824 and 1875 with financial support from the national government. The design and construction of such churches was subject to the approval and control of engineers from the Ministry of Public Works. Contrary to popular belief, the concept of a water state church is not linked to a particular architectural style.
