Between Borger and Buinen, the valley of the Eeser Voorste Diep cuts through the Hondsrug. The Eeser Voorste Diep is actually one of the two upper reaches of the Hunze. The Hunze is a river located in the border area of Drenthe and Groningen, east of the Hondsrug.
The valley in which the stream flows is a special geologic phenomenon, because it is a breakthrough valley or ice meltwater valley. The valley was formed by huge amounts of meltwater that were released when the land ice melted at the end of the penultimate ice age. At the place where the breakthrough valley ends in the Hunzedal is a rinse sand fan, a fan-shaped meltwater deposit of sand and gravel that is formed in front of an ice sheet or glacier front.
