The village of Orvelte presents itself as a museum village (or monument village), because of the many historical sights in and around the village. Brinkdorpen or esdorpen have a number of similarities. A brink is an open space in a village around which the farms are grouped, usually planted with oaks to use as building material. Originally the brink was located on the outskirts of the village and there the cows and sheep were collected in the evening and in the morning. During the day the cows were grazed together on the lower meadows and the sheep were herded by the village shepherd on the higher field (the heath). Due to the growth of the villages, the brink was later often located in the center of the village. Moreover, markets also took place on the brink, giving the brink a central function. Around the village are the ash trees. Ash trees are fields raised by plag fertilization. Plaggenbetilization is also called potting shed culture. Plags placed on the heath were used as a substrate for the cattle in potting stables (a potting shed is a stable in which the manure is potted) and sheepfolds. The plags were placed in the barn as litter and thus mixed with animal excrement into compost that was finally brought to the field on the ash tree annually for fertilization. The maggot lands (meadows and hay meadows) are located in the stream valleys. The meadows were grazed jointly by cows. The wetter hay meadows were mowed once a year. On the (heath) field the sheep of the village were herded by the village shepherd.
