The recent sea clay polders consist of an alternation of accretion and reclamation. In 1631, the dike was constructed around an accretion located between Walcheren and South Beveland. An accretion is a sandbank that has accumulated enough sediment amidst flowing water to be diked. The new polder was organized in a rational and planned manner for the benefit of agriculture. Amidst large and rectangular plots, eight farms emerged scattered throughout the area.
The marshes that later emerged as accretion (in the northwest against the polder) were diked in 1644. An accretion is a strip of land that has dried out against existing and diked land and is to be diked. Here too, the farms were not built in the village, but spread out across the polder.
