After the Second World War, the Witte Venn was a well-known smuggling region. Coffee, schnapps but also live animals were brought across the german-Dutch border past the customs officers. Smugglers and border guards outdid each other in ingenuity, so that the illegal behavior often took on the character of a cat and mouse game. Today, the romantic Witte Venn in Münsterland is a hiking and nature paradise.
