A loam pit or clay pit is a quarry, whether or not filled with water. A clay pit is created by the excavation of loam for building material (for floors or for the finishing of wickerwork walls) or for the manufacture of bricks. Clay was also used for both yard paving and road paving. After the excavation, the loam pits often remained unused, allowing special flora and fauna to settle.
The De Leemputten nature reserve in Zwolle owes its origin to the excavations from about 1900 by the Overkamp brick factory in Groenlo, which processed this Miocene clay until the end of the 70s of the last century. A lot of geological material, such as shark teeth and whale bones, were found in the loam.
