Obbicht Castle stands on the site of a medieval castle, which was destroyed by the Spanish occupiers at the beginning of the 80-year war. The castle was restored, but was lost again in the early 18th century due to the violence of war. The remains were replaced by the current castle in 1780.
In 1954, the new castle also went up in flames, but thanks to a successful restoration between 1975 and 1988, it was resurrected in all its glory. The building, like the adjacent castle farm, is now listed as a national monument. The moats around the castle are fed by water from the Kingbeek. There used to be a paper mill on this stream (1699), the birthplace of the well-known writer Pieter Ecrevisse.
