The Uddelermeer is an oval round lake of about 200 by 300 meters. It is a peculiar lake because it is located in the middle of the high sandy soils of the Veluwe, far above the actual groundwater level. The lake is 24 meters above sea level, which is very high for a natural lake in the Netherlands. You would expect that the water here would immediately sink into the sandy soil, but apparently that doesn't happen.
Because meltwater clay from the penultimate ice age (Saalien) is present in the soil there, the groundwater level is much higher than elsewhere in the Veluwe. There is a false groundwater level: the clay layer retains the water, causing the groundwater level to be five to ten metres higher than in the immediate vicinity.
