MILL OF THE NORTH
The mill 'Het Noorden' is an octagonal windmill built in 1878. It drained the 791 ha large polder 'Het Noorden', located in the northeast of the Wadden island Texel, on the landward side of the dike's hill basin or pool, which could drain into the Wadden Sea through a drainage sluice in the sea dike during low water.
As early as the mid-14th century, the surface area of the island of Texel was increased by diking off elevated lands located outside the dikes. This resulted over time in the polder area, mainly located on the Wadden Sea side of the island, consisting of 29 polders. After the diking of the Eijerland polder was completed in 1835, a bay remained between this polder and the old land of Texel located on the east side, allowing the sea to intrude deep inland.
