This water bank is a reconstruction of a water bank from the 17th century that stood on this spot, near hofstede Overdam. Many country estates had a water bank, as a resting place to look out over the river or to wait for guests arriving over the water. Only one historic water bank on the Vecht has been preserved, at Beek en Hoff in Loenen. From the water bank you look out on the island where Fort Hinderdam is located. Since 1629, a redoubt had been built here as part of the Dutch water line. This was replaced by a fort in 1673. In 1913 this was added to the Defence Line of Amsterdam, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. This fort is now managed by Natuurmonumenten.
