The Arsenal was built in 1787.
Fort Bath
On October 18, 1785, General Dumoulin was instructed by the Council of State to find a suitable location for a fort. In early 1786, he came up with the plan to build it at the Batse Kaaij. After the groundwork was completed, construction of the military buildings such as a gunpowder magazine, casemates, and barracks began in 1787. These were large enough to house a garrison of 300 soldiers. The fort was given two important tasks, namely the surveillance or obstruction of shipping to and from Antwerp and the protection of eastern South Beveland.
Kazernestraat, Schansweg, and Arsenaalstraat are references to Fort Bath.
