A few centuries ago this was the main channel of the Waal. The river moved and the old course disappeared and in the end there was not much left of it but a ditch. In the eighties, the clay that had been deposited in the old river course was dug away to bake stones. What remained was the Lange Gat, a puddle on the site of the old river course. In summer there is a beautiful vegetation along the banks with, among other things, swan flowers.
