It is a cross-border nature reserve that is called De Maatjes in Belgium and Matjens in the Netherlands. On the Dutch side, the area of the reed reserve is about 40 ha, on the Flemish side about 10 ha. Originally, it was a raised bog that was excavated here in the course of the 16th and 17th centuries. For years, the area had to contend with desiccation, but due to various measures, the Dutch part has become a lot wetter. Now it is an area with reed beds, swamp bushes and wet meadows. Rare reed and meadow birds have their breeding ground there.
