It took more than a century before the first spade was driven into the ground near Oosterhout in 1913 to provide Tilburg with a direct connection to the national waterway network. The Tilburg textile industry in particular, powered by steam engines, was in dire need of good opportunities for the supply and removal of coal products. On 4 April 1923, the 68-kilometre-long Wilhelmina Canal was completed, as was the connection between De Amer at Geertruidenberg and the Zuid-Willemsvaart. Due to the growth in inland shipping traffic, a start was made in 2013 on widening and deepening the canal.
