Pasaron más de cien años antes de que la primera pala entrara en el suelo en 1913 cerca de Oosterhout para proporcionar a Tilburg una conexión directa con la red de vías navegables del país. Especialmente la industria textil de Tilburg, impulsada por máquinas de vapor, necesitaba urgentemente buenas posibilidades para la entrega de carbón y la recogida de productos. El 4 de abril de 1923 se completó el canal Wilhelmina de 68 kilómetros de largo, así como la conexión de De Amer en Geertruidenberg y el Zuid-Willemsvaart. Debido al crecimiento del tráfico fluvial, en 2013 se inició la realización de un ensanchamiento y profundización del canal.
