The first bridge on this site was built in 1931. During the Second World War, the bridge was blown up in 1940 by the retreating Dutch troops and again in 1944 by the retreating German troops. In the 1970s, the bridge was widened by using six old spans of the Moerdijk Bridge, which was due for replacement in 1978. Within a few years, this bridge will also be replaced by a completely new bridge.
