After World War II, Dedemsvaart slowly lost its significance for shipping. At the end of the 1960s, the canal was closed to shipping and was largely filled in afterward. The N 377 partially runs along the route of the former canal. A lot of sand was needed for filling in the Dedemsvaart, resulting in the emergence of sand pits here and there. Thus, in Nieuwleusen, the Hulsterpas was created with an area of 5 HA.
In this respect, the municipality of Nieuwleusen had foresight by allowing residential construction around the newly created Hulsterplas in 1969. Beautiful spots have developed by this Hulsterplas, making it a lovely place for anyone who loves nature. One can enjoy walking, fishing, and skating in the winter. A fishing platform has also been constructed at the pond.
Where the water in the Dedemsvaart has disappeared, we still see water taking up a significant place in the numerous ponds that have been created.
