Itteren, in Limburgish Ittere, was a former Dutch municipality that was merged, in 1970, with the municipality of Maastricht.
Archaeologists have discovered eleven archaeological sites in the region. The oldest remains date back to the Stone Age, approximately 7000-4000 years ago. Glass bracelets from the Iron Age have also been found. Around the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC, a Roman villa was located in the area. Remains of this villa were discovered in 1995 and 1999 on the Pasestraat north of Borgharen, at the border with Itteren. At the same location, there was a cemetery in the 6th and 7th centuries. Near the mouth of the Guel, fragments of urns and cremations have been found.
