Ossenwaardpad is a newly constructed towpath along the Kromme Rijn.
In the year 47, the Romans proclaimed the Rhine as the northern border of their Roman Empire, the so-called 'Limes'. Hikers on this path follow in the footsteps of the Romans, who at the time kept watch here along the Kromme Rijn.
The Kromme Rijn was once a wild river, at least as wide as the Lek is today. It was an important shipping route for transport and trade between Utrecht and Dorestad (Wijk bij Duurstede). With special barges, the Krommerijnders, passengers were 'chased' from Wijk bij Duurstede to Utrecht on the towpath for 8 pennies and 12 cents.
