Nineteen clergymen were arrested in Gorkum by rebellious Calvinists in the first half of June 1572, shortly after the city was captured by the Sea Beggars. They were then transported via various locations to Den Briel, where they were held. The execution took place on July 9, 1572: that day, the martyrs were hanged in Den Briel in a barn near the former monastery. In Catholic tradition, July 9 has since been considered the day of remembrance for the Martyrs of Gorcum.
