The mill has been defining the image of Zeddam since the 15th century together with the church tower of the St. Oswaldus church. The parish of Zeddam is one of the oldest in the region, the first mentions date back to the 13th century.
The predecessor of the stone tower mill was the wooden standerdmolen that could be turned entirely on the wind. After the invention of the rotating roof, stone mills could be built. These were of course much sturdier but also less susceptible to fire and enemy attacks. After all, if no grain could be ground, no bread could be baked and famine could occur.
The mill used to be a forced mill, owned by the Counts Van den Bergh. The farmers of the area had the duty to have their grain milled at the Zeddam mill. Around 1800 this system was abolished and the millers were free to grind for anyone who came to offer grain. A form of competition arose between the millers and the Zeddam mill was then rebuilt so that it became possible to grind stones with several pairs of stones at the same time.
