This lake was created by sand and clay extraction in the past. The clay was processed into bricks in the adjacent brick factory de Koornwaard. In this way, the lake was deepened to no less than 22 to 24 meters. In 2014 and 2015, the Rivierenland Water Board dredged the Linge between Geldermalsen and Gorinchem to make the river more navigable again. The dredge was used in the redevelopment of this lake, which staatsbosbeheer now owns. Because the bottom now varies much more in height, the water becomes suitable again to accommodate a greater variety of fish. The area is part of the Ecological Main Structure.
