Cette mare est née de l'extraction de sable et d'argile dans le passé. L'argile a été transformée en briques dans la briqueterie voisine de Koornwaard. La mare a été approfondie de cette manière jusqu'à atteindre 22 à 24 mètres. L'autorité de l'eau Rivierenland a dragé la Linge entre Geldermalsen et Gorinchem en 2014 et 2015, afin de rendre la rivière à nouveau plus navigable. Les boues dragées ont été utilisées pour le réaménagement de cette mare, dont Staatsbosbeheer est maintenant le propriétaire. Maintenant que le fond varie beaucoup plus en hauteur, l'eau redevient appropriée pour abriter une plus grande variété de poissons. La zone fait partie de la Structure Écologique Principale.
