Dieser See entstand durch Sand- und Tonabbau in der Vergangenheit. Der Ton wurde in der benachbarten Ziegelfabrik de Koornwaard zu Backsteinen verarbeitet. Der See wurde auf diese Weise bis zu 22 bis 24 Meter tief ausgebaggert. Das Wasserwirtschaftsamt Rivierenland hat 2014 und 2015 die Linge zwischen Geldermalsen und Gorinchem ausgebaggert, um den Fluss wieder besser befahrbar zu machen. Der Schlick wurde bei der Neugestaltung dieses Sees verwendet, dessen Eigentümer jetzt Staatsbosbeheer ist. Da der Boden jetzt viel mehr in der Höhe variiert, wird das Wasser wieder geeignet, eine größere Vielfalt an Fischen zu beherbergen. Das Gebiet ist Teil der Ökologischen Hauptstruktur.
